Before Victorian times it was known as pokerwork and since then it has developed into a fine art and is a skill not easily mastered. Different colours and textures can be obtained by varying the temperature, speed of movement and pressure of the heated tool on the leather or wood surface. While browsing this website you will be introduced to artwork by Kobus van Zyl, one of South Africa's top pyrographic artists. You will find that through the use of a hot solder iron on leather he has created some of the most amazing art pieces. The 'painting' is finished off by being set in a wooden frame made from some of South Africa's most beautiful woods. Even the frame and wood is carefully selected for its texture and colour to enhance the image that was created on the leather. Browse
